37 SUHSD International Thespian Society students represented our district at the California Thespian Festival on March 22 – 24 at Upland High School. Thespians performed monologues and scenes, auditioned for two main stage shows, and interviewed for technical staff positions to run the shows alongside industry professionals. If that’s not enough, we attend acting and tech workshops, watch snippets of shows from other talented and inspiring California high schools, play zany theatre games, eat and drink way too much sugar/caffeine, and don’t catch up on our beauty sleep until we hop that long bus ride home.
How did we do? Salinas High School can boast having the number one monologue winner in the state of California. Everett Alvarez High School students auditioned and were selected to perform excerpts from CA playwright Josefina Lopez’s (Real Women Have Curves) plays on the main stage. Our own NSHS student, Adrian Flores, performed on the main stage of the All-State Show, whereby students prepare a piece [dancing, singing, or acting] related to a theme and audition. Students who make the cut work with a director to put on a professional showcase-style production in just six hours. The best part? 1200 people in the house! Yep, that’s right, 1200 people. Our house seats a mere 120…how cool is that?!
Now we know that theatre isn’t just about acting, as NSHS Thespian President Kaylie Padgett served as assistant stage manager for the All-State Show. Lest one think being an assistant stage manager is a cakewalk job, not only did she remind performers of entrances, she sorted microphones and negotiated a safe place for a cute dog to be secured until its entrance. [I have a sneaking suspicion that we did a standing ovation for the dog rather than the lovely singer who held it…]
The International Thespian Society has been honoring excellence in the work of theatre students since 1929. To be eligible member of ITS, students typically work 100 hours in at least two categories of theatre: acting, design, front of house, directing, media & publicity. The Society recently inducted its two millionth Thespian. We will hold our NSHS induction ceremony in May. Look for those invites!
